"Bayside" by Lawrence Baker

"Bayside" painted in 1985 by Lawrence Baker is a common scene this time of year on the coast of Maine. Lobstermen are getting their boats and gear ready for this year's fishing season. The low tide in the cove allows the man easy access to his stern so his sanding and varnishing can be completed. You can see the detail in this painting quite easily - the strands of seaweed clinging to the rocks, the reflection of the piers in the water, and even the different wind currents on the surface. "Signs of Spring" by Lawrence Baker is this season's featured painting. Painted in 1983, this oil painting is of two lovers holding hands walking down the railroad tracks. The melting snow is typical of New England this time of year. Lawrence's talent and style of taking subjects from different places and combining them into one painting is evident here. The old train station is in Weston, MA, and one of the subjects is actually me! We posed in Waltham, MA by balancing on a driveway and curb to get the heights right. "The Alley" by Lawrence Baker was painted in 1977. This is a self portrait of him sitting alone in an old alley behind some buildings, close by where he used to work by the Charles River in Waltham, Massachusetts. This painting is a reminder that we must always look forward during tough times and work hard to avoid ending up like this - wearing old battered clothes, alone, with a bottle nearby. The details in this painting are so amazing that you can imagine him standing up, brushing himself off, and walking right up that hill toward the sunshine and brighter days.

Typical of Lawrence's talent, this painting looks like a photograph. You can see the unique bricks on the wall, the trash and leaves on the ground, and the details of the clothes he wore. The original painting (as most of them did) took several months to complete as he used fine sable brushes and oil paint. "Old Salt Antiques" was painted by Lawrence Baker in 1981. Located just north of the Bath bridge on Route 1 in Woolwich, ME, it was truly a landmark. Back then, shops like it were frequent sights in rural areas of New England. Containing a treasure trove of collectibles, folks would often spend quite a bit of time searching for "finds". Nowadays scenes like this are few and far between. Lawrence loved this shop so much it is the subject of another painting from a different view, called "The Notice" completed in 1977. Old Salt Antiques had been sold and renamed "Dot's Good Deals" several years ago. Unfortunately, a recent fire destroyed the entire building and contents, rendering this painting a true piece of history. Museum quality giclee prints are available both on paper and canvas. "The Crossing" is a compilation of subjects from different areas. For example, the railroad cars and tracks are from Brunswick, Maine, and the crossing guard shack is from Waltham, MA. The man posing as the crossing guard is actually the family's beloved "Grampa", Joseph J. Uberti! Where the background came from is still a mystery.
